Our Symbol
The Peregrine Falcon is one of the many species recovery success stories this country can boast.
Like many raptors (predator birds) the Peregrine was affected from the DDT pesticide widely used in the middle of the 20th Century. The chemicals made their way through the food chain and caused the eggs of meat eating birds to be formed with shells so thin they did not survive.
Though originally inhabiting most of North America, by 1965 virtually none were to be found east of the Mississippi.
